Rachel Grant’s Article Nominated for Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly’s 2022 Outstanding Research Article

Rachel Grant, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism assistant professor, and colleagues Joy Jenkins and Ayleen Cabas-Mijares, are finalists for the Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly’s 2022 Outstanding Research Article Award for their article “Selling Breonna: Twitter Responses to Breonna Taylor on the Covers of O, The Oprah Magazine and Vanity Fair” published on July 23, 2022.

The article, published in a special issue on Social Media and the Black Lives Matter Movement, features their study examining the Twitter response to magazine covers that illuminated how mass media commodifies Black womanhood. A summary of the research can be viewed here.

The annual award aims to recognize the author(s) of an article deemed most significant in contribution to the theory or methodology in journalism and mass communication. Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) members vote for the article that they consider most significant in contribution and innovation in scholarship, then the top articles that received the most votes will be evaluated by the journal’s editorial board and the review board will make the final decision.

Winners will receive a certificate, a $1,000 cash award and will present the paper at the annual AEJMC conference Aug. 7-10 in Washington, D.C.
