Ph.D. Program

Innovation News Center Doctoral Assistantship

Up to two doctoral assistantships will be awarded to incoming Ph.D. students who will have leadership roles in the UF Innovation News Center, home of north central Florida’s public-media platforms.

The assistantship includes:

  • Fully funded Ph.D. program with a commitment to four years of tuition waivers and annual stipends (recently about $32,000 per year)
  • Teaching appointment with a minimum of two years managing in our student Innovation News Center with opportunities to teach other (and experimental) courses
  • Possible research-assistant assignments

In this preeminent research program at a Top-5 university, you can focus your research interest in any number of fields within journalism, media, and/or communications. These areas include, but are not limited to, the future of journalism, emerging technologies (like VR and AR), journalism in diverse communities, and more.

A master’s degree is required, and you must apply and be accepted to the Ph.D. program.

Preferred professional experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Broadcast journalism
  • Multimedia journalism
  • Community journalism
  • Investigative reporting
  • Digital producing

The Innovation News Center is a two-story, 14,000-square-foot newsroom that provides hands-on learning opportunities for students to produce content for wuft.org and seven media properties, including the local NPR, PBS and ESPN affiliates. Our student journalists regularly earn recognition in annual national and regional awards competitions, including Hearst, SPJ, RTDNA and National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
