Advertising Adjunct Professor Walter John Starr Has Passed Away at 78

Dear Students,

W. John Starr

I hope this message finds you well, especially during these challenging times. With profound sadness, I must inform you of the passing of our esteemed instructor, Dr. W. John Starr, who had been a dedicated pillar in our academic journey within ADV3001. He was 78 years old.

Dr. Starr was more than a teacher; he was a mentor and a guiding light, known for his passion for advertising and his deep commitment to fostering student success. His unexpected departure is a significant loss to our community, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and learning from him.

To ensure that your education continues seamlessly, we are fortunate that Dr. Cynthia Morton will take over the instruction for the remainder of Dr. Starr’s course. During this difficult period, we encourage anyone seeking support to reach out. UF Counseling and Wellness Center (https://counseling.ufl.edu/) is available to all students, and we urge you to use these resources.

We understand how challenging it can be to receive such news and want to assure you of our unwavering support. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Dr. James Babanikos, our Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs for any academic concerns or UF Counseling and Wellness Center for support.

Let us honor Dr. Starr’s memory by continuing our academic pursuits with the dedication and enthusiasm he always encouraged.

Best,

Huan Chen
Chair, Department of Advertising
