UFCJC and Futuri Partner to Implement AI-Driven Technology on Multi-Platform “Radio Station” GHQ

GHQ, the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) multi-platform “radio station,” is partnering with Futuri Media to use Futuri’s RadioGPT™ AI technology, making GHQ one of the first radio stations in the world to use this service to better connect to audiences.

RadioGPT™ uses Futuri’s TopicPulse system to scan Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more than 250,000 other sources of news and information to identify which topics are trending in a local market. It then uses GPT-4 technology to develop a script and AI voice to create audio for on-air and on-demand use. It can also generate social posts, blogs and other content for digital platforms related to the content on the air in real-time.

In this implementation, GHQ will use the technology to create “Q,” an AI personality to develop and read scripts with hourly updates on weather, events and other news around UF and the Gainesville community. The content will be provided by GHQ staff and students and Q will enhance for broadcasting. As part of their R&D partnership, UFCJC and Futuri will analyze how effective the technology is in connecting with the radio station’s audience. The research and development effort will help the radio industry develop best practices in the effective and ethical use of AI in their operations.

According the UFCJC Division of Media Properties Executive Director Randy Wright, “Our ongoing partnership with Futuri Media is more important than ever with the pace at which AI is becoming a relevant part of the broadcast industry. We operate in both the public and commercial broadcast spaces, so we’re able create real-world test scenarios with Futuri in our media operations and provide students with hands-on experience working with the latest technology and AI applications.”

GHQ is a dynamic multi-platform “radio” station run by students using mobile, social and digital audience engagement technology designed by Futuri. This research and development lab, operated under the direction of the College’s professional staff, is using audio-based app features and testing engagement, acceptance and likability through digital and social platforms in UF’s 50,000+ student community.
