Jordan Alpert, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising assistant professor, is co-author of “A Simulated Graphical Interface for Integrating Patient-Generated Health Data from Smartwatches With Electronic Health Records: Usability Study” published in JMIR Human Factors on Oct. 30.

Alpert, Naga Prabhaker Kota, Sanjay Ranka, Tonatiuh Mendoza, Lawrence Solberg, Parisa Rashidi and Todd Manini designed a simulated graphical interface that displayed patients’ health data from smartwatches, which mimicked how the interface would appear if it was integrated with electronic health records. They asked health care professionals to evaluate the interface using a usability scale questionnaire and the result was positive. They found that to effectively implement such data from smartwatches and other mobile devices within electronic health records, it is necessary to consider the opinions of key stakeholders.

According to the authors, “Incorporating health data from smartwatches into electronic health records may benefit patient care, but it is important to consider the way in which data are presented to and visualized by health care professionals. Partnering with key stakeholders (health care professionals), who will be the main users of the interface is essential to developing a practical and valuable platform.”
