CJC Adjunct Instructor Publishes Florida-Themed Essay Collection

Jim Ross, an adjunct instructor at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications and managing editor of the Ocala Star-Banner, is the editor of In Season: Stories of Discovery, Loss, Home, and Places In Between,” a Florida-themed essay collection just published (Spring 2018) by the University Press of Florida.

Travelers to Florida often imagine the state as just a vacationland or a swamp. The writers in this essay collection discover the truth that everyone who’s lived in the state knows: When you venture into Florida you won’t find what you expect . . . and what you do find will stay with you forever.

“In Season” includes essays from Ross, who has been an adjunct since 2007, as well as essays from a range of authors including Lauren Groff and Sandra Gail Lambert (both Gainesville residents) and Rick Bragg.

In a blurb published on the back of the book, Mike Foley, the Hugh Cunningham Professor in Journalism Excellence, said “In Season” is “discerning and thoughtful.”

“Ross has an eye for work that reflects the human condition — the good, the bad, and the ugly,” Foley wrote. “Even if you’ve lived in Florida all your life, you’ll learn something. And you will enjoy it.”
