Professor Emeritus – Department of Telecommunication

Johanna Cleary worked for 25 years in journalism, including stints in public television, commercial and public radio, and newspapers. She was also a marketing and public relations practitioner for media, arts and non-profit organizations. Cleary is one of three co-authors of the book The Best of Pulitzer Prize News Writing.

Her research interests include newsroom management, international communication, and broadcast history. Her work has been published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Mass Communication and Society, the International Journal on Media Management, Digital Journalism, International Gazette, and the Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal, among others. Cleary received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Cleary worked for Alabama Public Television (APT) for 16 years in various capacities, including as a reporter/producer, director of marketing for the news department, and news director. While at APT, she won a number of regional and national journalism awards.
