“Berlin 2011,” a book produced with students’ photographs from this summer’s study abroad course, has been published and distributed to students in the course. Associate Professor John Freeman, who conducted the two-week course in Berlin for the seventh consecutive year, said, “The program is a great example of international journalism produced on the fly. Each student finds a subject to portray and produces an online audio slideshow before we leave Berlin. The book serves as a companion piece to the website.”

This year’s cover photograph was shot by Meredith Rutland, who worked as a reporting intern for the Orlando Sentinel later in the summer. It shows a vendor at a flea market. Prof. Freeman began the course in 2005 partly as a way to return and photograph the city where he learned photography as a student at a Department of Defense high school when the Berlin Wall was standing.

The Berlin Journalism program, which will run May 18 – 31 in 2012, accepts 12 to 15 students each summer. Applications are available through the UF International Center. More Information →
