College to recognize five Alumni of Distinction

The College will recognize five alumni this spring as Alumni of Distinction, Senior Associate Dean Linda Hon announced. Including these five, the College will have recognized only 108 of its more than 24,000 graduates in this manner.
The alumni have been invited to participate in the College’s annual awards banquet on Wednesday, April 8 and the undergraduate commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 2.
The five are:
- Dana Bullen, JOU 1953, (1931-2007). Following 15 years as the World Press Freedom Committee’s executive director, in 1997 Bullen was senior adviser to the WPFC, a coordination group of national and international news media organizations. WPFC includes as affiliates 45 journalistic organizations on six continents. During 21 years with The Washington Star before joining WPFC, he was foreign editor, U.S. Senate reporter, U.S. Supreme Court reporter, a syndicated columnist and an assistant news editor of that newspaper. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, 1966-67; a Research Fellow at Harvard’s East Asian Research Center, 1971; and Journalist in Residence at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, 1980-1981. In 2000, he was awarded the Inter American Press Association’s Chapultepec Grand Prize in recognition of his work for press freedom.
- Darrell Hammond, ADV 1978, has been a cast member of “Saturday Night Live” since 1995. Hammond also holds the record for the longest consecutive tenure of any SNL case member in the show’s history. His film credits are extensive, including acting roles in “Netherbeast Inc.,” “Celtic Pride,” “Blues Brothers 2000,” “The King and I,” “Scary Movie 3,” “Agent Cody Banks,” “New York Minute,” “Ira and Abby,” and “Epic Movie.” A gifted impressionist, he has frequented the talk show circuit, appearing on shows including “Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “Rosie O’Donnell,” “Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Late Night with Conan Brian.” Other acting stints include guest starring in hit television shows such as “Law and Order Special Victims Unit” and “Law and Order: Criminal Intent.”
- Yungwook Kim, Ph.D. 1999, is an Associate Professor and Associate Vice President for the Office of Communications at Ewha Womans University. Yungwook was honored as the top communication scholar in South Korea when he received the “New Communication Research Scholar Award” by the Korean Society of Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS) in 2001. He also was a recipient of the “Research of the Year Award” by the Korean Society of Public Relations in 2001. His professional affiliations include Policy Evaluation Specialist for the Office of Prime Minister, Advisory Professor for the National Health Insurance Agency, and member of the Advisory Committee for the Korean Food and Drug Administration, the Korean Overseas Information Agency, and the Government Information Agency for the Republic of Korea. He provides strategic and crisis communication consulting for private and public institutions including LG-Caltex Petroleum, SK Construction, Amway Korea, Arirang International Television, Seoul National University, and Newsweek Korea. He has served as Research Director and Education Director for Korean Academic Society of Public Relations (KASPR), Research Director for Korean Association of Advertising and Public Relations (KAAPR), and the Feminism Task Force for the Korean Society of Journalism and Communication Studies (KSJCS). In 2007-2008, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. In 2008, he was selected by the University of Florida as an “Outstanding Young Alumnus.”
Yungwook Kim
- Mickey G. Nall, M.A.M.C. 1982, is the managing director of the Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide (Ogilvy PR) Atlanta office and member of Ogilvy PR’s worldwide management committee. Mickey has been with Ogilvy PR for more than half of his professional career, where he has worked in the agency’s Washington, D.C., and New York offices before taking his current position in the Atlanta office in 2005. His clients at Ogilvy PR have included The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy; Federal Emergency Management Agency; Brand Atlanta; U.S. Fire Administration; United Way of America; American Automobile Association (AAA); Carolinas Health Systems; Coca-Cola’s Minute Maid products, Sylvan Learning Systems, and General Electric Global Exchange Services. Prior to joining Ogilvy, he served as director of communications for the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACP). He also represented AACAP at the annual Rosalyn Carter Symposium on Mental Health and was a member of The Carter Center’s mental-health media advisory board. Prior to his employment at AACAP, he was president of The Nall II Agency Inc., a Florida-based public relations consulting firm. He is active in the Public Relations Society of America for which he served two terms in the Assembly House of Delegates. He serves as co-chair of the PRSA-Georgia Advocacy Committee and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the PRSA Foundation. He also is a member of the health marketing leadership roundtable of the National Center for Health Marketing at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. He is accredited (APR) and in 2008 was inducted into PRSA’s College of Fellows. He is a past president of the Florida Public Relations Association and has received numerous industry awards.
Mickey Nall
- Terry Van Nortwick, PUR 1970, M.A.M.C. 1977, founder and president of PRO iNK, has over 35 years of experience in public relations and communications. Terry speaks and leads workshops on developing strategic public relations and marketing plans, employee/union communications, publications design and evaluation as well as starting a business and advertising techniques for businesses. She has served as vice president of The Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce and is active in community and human rights issues. She has served on boards and advisory committees for United Way, United Negro College Fund, Shands Miracle Network Telethon and was founding chair of the Santa Fe Community College Graphic Design Program. In 1998, the Gainesville Council for Economic Outreach named her “Business Volunteer of the Year,” and in 1994 the Gainesville Chapter of Florida Public Relations named her “Public Relations Professional of the Year.” She also was named a “Woman Who Makes a Difference” in 2001 by the Gateway Girl Scout Council.
