Huan Chen Named UFCJC Advertising Department Chair

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Advertising Associate Professor Huan Chen has been named chair of the Advertising Department, after serving as interim chair since last November.

During her tenure as interim chair, the department hired three new faculty members, Hyesoo Chang, Yuan Sun and Jinping Wang. It also added three new permanent courses — Branding and Social Media, Cultural Branding, and Account Management – and offered or developed five new electives, including Creative Portfolio 2, Creative Portfolio 3, Social Media Analytics and Strategy, Agency Essentials, and Advertising and AI. The department also launched the Advertising Creative Certificate and, for the UF International Scholar Program, certified the courses International and Cross-Cultural Advertising and Game-Changing Ad Ideas through the UF International Center.

Chen joined the College in 2015 as an Advertising assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2019.  Since 2016, she has been one of our more prolific scholars with more than 45 refereed journal articles and three book chapters. Her research articles were selected as the outstanding paper in the 2023 Emerald Literati Awards, one of the 2019 most influential articles in the Journal of Advertising, and one of the most read articles in the Journal of Current Issues and Research in Advertising.

She was awarded the Research Fellowship of the American Academy of Advertising in 2017, 2020, and 2022. In 2019, she received the College’s Faculty Research Award and the McGraw-Hill Distinguished Scholar Award for the EQRC Conference. In 2020, she and Sylvia Chan-Olmsted received a UF Research Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Catalyst Fund award for their project “Fairness in Information Access Through Culturally Competent AI Systems,” and was co-PI on a $350,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to look at bridging digital divides in undergraduate data science education.

Chen serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Advertising, International Journal of Advertising, Journal of Advertising Research, Annals of Management Science, and Journal of Ethnography and Qualitative Research, and has served as a reviewer for numerous journals and conferences.

Chen received a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Wuhan University, a master’s in Advertising from UF and her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
