Mindy McAdams, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism Professor and Knight Chair in Journalism Technologies and the Democratic Process, has been selected as the 2019 winner of the Society of Professional Journalists’ Distinguished Teaching in Journalism Award.

The annual award honors a collegiate journalism educator and recognizes outstanding teaching ability, contributions to journalism, journalism education and contributions toward maintaining the highest standards of the profession. She will receive the award at the Excellence in Journalism Conference in San Antonio, Texas in September. In 2013, Mike Foley, CJC Journalism Master Lecturer and Hugh Cunningham Professor in Journalism Excellence, received the same honor.

In addition, McAdams’ contributions to a panel at the World Journalism Education Congress (WJEC) in Paris were included in the July 2019 edition of the Journalism Innovation Newsletter.

McAdams shared her list of the top skills that journalism students will need in the years ahead. They include numeracy and/or data literacy, the ability to listen to people – especially those different from yourself, collaborating, submitting Freedom of Information requests, correctly assessing the credibility of source material, creating an information network that feeds new ideas, organizing your time and assets, and learning how to determine what you need to learn next.
