Matthew Barnidge to Join UFCJC as a Journalism Associate Professor in August 2025

Matthew Barnidge will be joining the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism Department as an associate professor for the fall 2025 semester.

Barnidge is currently an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and Creative Media at the University of Alabama. He is a journalism and political communication scholar, and his work focuses on how media technologies and online platforms shape political information flows and enable the emergence of new ideas and ideologies.

He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles on these topics, including publications in leading journals such as Journal of Communication, Political Communication, Digital Journalism and New Media & Society. He is an outgoing associate editor of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and he sits on the editorial boards of several prominent journals in the fields of journalism and communication.

Previously he was a faculty member at the University of Alabama and the University of Vienna in Austria. Barnidge earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master’s degree from Louisiana State University and a Bachelor’s from the University of Texas at Austin.
