University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Center for Public Interest Communications Director Ann Searight Christiano and Angela Bradbery, the College’s Frank Karel Chair in Public Interest Communications, were featured on a recent episode of the “Let’s Hear It” podcast.

In the episode, titled “The Public Interest Comms Textbook We Needed Yesterday,” hosts Eric Brown and Kirk Brown interview Christiano and Bradbery about their new textbook Public Interest Communications Strategy for Changemakers. The book is the first of its kind to detail how public interest communications, an evidence-based approach to using strategic communications, can drive social change.

Christiano and Bradbery discuss how their years in the trenches at places like the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Public Citizen shape the textbook. They emphasize the importance of storytelling, systems thinking and listening as essential tools for creating impact.

They also explore concepts such as the “six spheres of influence,” their “back-of-the-envelope” strategy tool, and the idea that being strategic means more than just “shouting into the void.”
