Amy Jo Coffey’s Media Analytics Textbook Receives Prestigious BEA Award

Media Analytics: Understanding Media, Audiences, and Consumers in the 21st Century” by Amy Jo Coffey, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology associate professor, and University of Georgia Professor Emeritus Ann Hollifield has been selected for the prestigious 2024 Broadcast Education Association (BEA) Textbook Award.

“Media Analytics” introduces the key principles of media economics and management and outlines how to interpret and present results, the principles of data visualization and storytelling, and the basics of research design and sampling.

The first comprehensive skills-based textbook of media analytics was developed in response to BEA’s more than two-decades long effort to encourage universities to develop media analytics curricula to meet the industry’s demand for professionals skilled in data analysis and data-driven decision making. The volume also includes case studies on optimizing a local news blog, evaluating a news podcast launch and strategizing the future of a local new media company.

A companion website for the “Media Analytics” book  includes additional information and  messages from the authors to instructors and students and answers to frequently asked questions.

In a BEA press release, Coffey thanked industry colleagues “who generously shared their time and expertise with us, and the media research companies whose data donations made ‘Media Analytics’ the hands-on teaching tool that it is. We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to the textbook’s success. They have played a valuable role in preparing the next generation of analysts.”

Coffey will be leaving UFCJC this summer to become the director of the University of Tennessee School of Journalism and Media. The school is part of Tennessee’s College of Communication and Information.

The BEA Textbook Award was established in 2020 to recognize an outstanding textbook written by a BEA member(s) in the field of broadcasting and mass communication. Each year the recipient will be recognized at BEA’s annual convention in Las Vegas.
