Gavin Off

Lecturer in Data Journalism - Department of Journalism

Gavin brings more than two decades of experience as a journalist, including 15 years specializing in data reporting. Most recently, he has served as the data reporter for The Charlotte Observer, where his work on government corruption, criminal justice, and environmental issues earned national recognition, including four awards for a recent investigative series on North Carolina’s poultry industry.

A proud product of regional newsrooms, Gavin began his career on Florida’s Gulf Coast with The Charlotte Sun and went on to work at newspapers and news services across the country, including Scripps Howard News Service, Tulsa World and The Charlotte Observer. His passion for data journalism was sparked as a student at the University of Missouri, where he worked with the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting.

In recent years, Gavin has taught data journalism at multiple universities in the Carolinas, and he describes teaching as the best part of his professional day.
