WUFT News Honored in National 2025 PMJA National Awards Competition
Staff members from the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Innovation News Center and a recent graduate have been recognized with six 2025 Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA) Awards. The awards recognize the best public media journalism work in 2024 from across the U.S.
Winners in Division A (0 to 3 newsroom staff) include:
- Education Feature: First Place, “Success coaches for homeless students lose their jobs as federal funding runs dry” by Multimedia Content Producer Kristin Moorehead.
- Health/Medical Feature: First Place, “Alzheimer’s Association’s Brain Bus comes to North Central Florida” by Multimedia Reporter and Producer Áine Pennello.
- Digital Writing: First Place, “Do we want to pack it full of houses? Springs lovers challenge development plans in Alachua’s fragile Mill Creek” by Report for America Reporter Rose Schnabel.
- Digital Writing: Second Place, “Report: Gainesville VA medical center incorrectly used Baker Act on veteran” by Kristin Moorehead.
- Use of Sound: Second Place, “Inside the grassroots plant rescue ops to save Florida’s native species” by Rose Schnabel.
In the student competition (all divisions):
- Student Spot News: First Place, “Newberry Tempers Flare” by Matthew Cupelli, B.S. Journalism 2025.
PMJA, formerly known as Public Radio News Directors Inc., represents those responsible for the day-to-day reporting, editing and direction of local public media newsrooms.
In 2025, the association presented 266 first- and second-place awards to 113 organizations in five divisions, representing public media organizations with as few as one to more than 30 newsroom employees. The entries were judged by more than 70 public media professionals.
Winners were announced at the 2025 PMJA Cultivating Innovation Conference, held June 25-27 in Kansas City.
