Andrew Selepak Comments on Online Terrorist Recruitment

June 12, 2025

Andrew Selepak, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Media Production, Management, and Technology associate instructional professor, was quoted in “’Extremists are as Digital as the Rest of Us:’ How Terrorists are Recruiting the Chronically Online” posted on cybernews.com on June 6.

The article explores how terrorist and extremist groups are using artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital tools to groom children and recruit internet users.

“While social media companies have gotten better at censoring extremism on their platforms and groups like ISIS no longer have accounts on mainstream platforms, social media algorithms continue to radicalize users as they feed them content based on content consumption,” said Selepak.

“AI content is starting to have some impact on radicalizing individuals, as it has become easier to create propaganda and misinformation about events,” he said. “We have an epidemic where people are lonelier than ever before and less connected to families, romantic partners, community, institutions, and depending on the extremist group, to religion.”
