May 12, 2025

Sophia Abolfathi, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology senior, placed third in the 2024-25 Hearst Journalism Awards Explanatory Reporting – Individual/Team competition. The winners were selected from 93 entries submitted by 58 schools in the final writing competition of the year.

Her entry, “The Atlantic Sojourner: An Ode to Right Whale #5120” was published in Atrium Magazine, the College’s narrative non-fiction publication. The article, created in Cynthia Barnett’s spring 2024 “Advanced Science, Environment and Health Reporting” course, tells the story of the plight of right whales through the short life of one young whale, #5120, from birth to death.

Albofathi and Journalism senior Lauren Brensel, who won first place in the Hearst Feature Writing competition, will represent UFCJC in the 2025 National Writing Championship in San Francisco.

UFCJC has also won the Intercollegiate Writing competition based on the highest accumulation of student points from the four writing competitions this academic year. The honor includes a $10,000 prize.
