Ph.D.
Afolasade Ola is a first-gen Ph.D. student at the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida. She holds a B.A. in English from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria, an M.A. in American Culture Studies, and a certificate in Women’s Studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Before graduate school, Afolasade worked in the areas of human rights advocacy, the radio, and online news platforms in Nigeria, cultivating her early commitment to social justice through the news and storytelling. Following her master’s thesis, where she explored how social media is currently shaping the discourse around queer activism in Nigeria, she is hoping to combine this research with her emerging interest in platform governance, data privacy, algorithmic boundaries, and policy for marginalized populations.
