What classes will you be teaching?

This fall I’ll be teaching:

  • JOU 3601 Photographic Journalism – our intro to visual journalism class
  • JOU 4604 Advanced Photojournalism 1 – mainly for those specializing in visual journalism, but everyone is welcome
  • JOU 4201 The Photojournalism Experience – our visual journalism immersion experience

What is your area of expertise?

I’ve been a working photojournalist for more than 20 years covering news and sports, conflict and climate, life and death. I use photos to tell the stories of people from all walks of life, all over the world.

What accomplishments, personal or professional, are you most proud of?

When the CJC started the annual Adjunct of the Year award in 2018, they gave me the honor.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies?

I enjoy traveling, exploring, hiking and fishing.

What advice would you give to a student just getting started in your area of expertise?

The best advice I can give students is pursue something you love. Not just something you like or something that you’re good at. Find something that excites you, that wakes you before your alarm does and makes getting up on a Monday morning easy. If you haven’t found it yet, don’t fret. You will! Keep looking. Keep trying. Keep living.

Your hero or biggest inspiration (alive or historical)?

My mom is my hero. She had the ability to make anyone laugh during any situation. She knew no strangers, treated rules as suggestions and got her greatest joy from helping others.

What three things don’t we know about you?

  • I am an excellent chef.
  • I’ve photographed six presidents.
  • I pay for a haircut twice a month.
