Quick Facts
- Graduated from the University of Delaware with a bachelor’s degree and from UCLA with a Ph.D. in Communication
- Her research rides the line between sociology and journalism, specifically in how politics, emotions, and identity shape our individual news habits.
What classes will you be teaching?
I’ll be teaching Audience Engagement and co-teaching Journalism, Justice, and Civic Change.
What is your area of expertise?
My research focuses on the ways in which affect and identity influence media selection and political behaviors. For instance, I have most recently been interested in the ways psychophysiological responses to content drive media selection, and in particular the ways in which these responses may be a mechanism driving news avoidance. My work relies on a combination of physiological lab experiments, in-person interviews, and survey data.
Significant other, children, pets?
My partner, Joe, works in medical device sales in Alaska (!) and I am Zia Mia to my nephew, Roman.
What accomplishments, personal or professional, are you most proud of?
Making multiple cross-country moves, having the most amazing friends, running a marathon, and becoming Dr. Carbone!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work? Any hobbies?
I love to exercise (yoga, Pilates, weightlifting), try new restaurants, and spend time with my friends, family, and Joe.
What is your favorite piece of media (book, movie, show, game)?
My guilty pleasure shows are Love Island UK and Glee. My favorite book is The Women by Kristen Hannah. My favorite media to consume is music, and I hope to one day research the intersection of pop music/musicians as a source of political information!
What advice would you give to a student just getting started in your area of expertise?
Be curious, and be comfortable with and excited by everything you don’t know 🙂
What three things don’t we know about you?
- I am a yoga sculpt instructor
- I will never say no to ice cream
- I am scared of birds (which has been a tough adjustment moving here!).
