New UFCJC student produced sports magazine goes beyond the box score to uncover deeper narratives
Grandstand Magazine, a new print and digital publication by University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications students, aims to go beyond the box score to uncover deeper narratives within the sports world and to report and tell them in compelling ways.
The magazine was created in the fall of 2025 by Journalism Sports Lecturer Ryan Hunt’s Advanced Sports Storytelling class. Editor-in-Chief Liana Handler and Managing Editor Noah White lead a team that includes over 20 contributors, seven print/graphic designers and multiple web developers focusing on storytelling that is creative, thought-provoking and engaging.
“We started by determining what we wanted our brand to be. The name came next, and we brainstormed about fonts, colors and every other branding aspect that goes into designing a website and magazine,” said White. “These were spirited discussions, but that’s the product of having a staff that truly cares about what it’s working toward. Our editing staff determined a workflow for how we assign work and accept pitches, sending each of our writers out with multiple projects to pursue.”
The result is print and digital stories on the relationship between golf and winter (and, oh yeah, bears), an uplifting tale of Camilo Villegas, a professional golfer who lost his daughter at 22 months old and has since founded a non-profit to fight the illness that took her life and a UF Olympian reflecting on life — and challenges — after winning a gold medal.
“The Grandstand launch team has ambitious expectations and high standards,” writes Handler. “It aspires to punch above its weight and challenge readers to think about what sports are: do they exist in a vacuum or are they the intersection of culture, life and community? This Grandstand staff believes in the latter.”
Grandstand will publish digital features each week. The first print issue will be released in April 2026.
