Ted Bridis Comments on Rejection of Journalists’ Bid to Witness Indiana Executions
Ted Bridis, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Michael and Linda Connelly senior lecturer in Investigative Reporting, was quoted in “Judge Rejects Journalists’ Bid to Witness Indiana Executions While Lawsuit Proceeds” published on May 18 in the Evansville Courier & Press.
The story focuses on Indiana prison officials’ decision to bar journalists from witnessing executions, a move currently being challenged in court.
Bridis, who has witnessed executions in Kentucky and Oklahoma as a news media observer, emphasized the importance of transparency.
“This is the ultimate use of force by the government,” said Bridis. “We need to be there as independent observers, as representatives of the public and our readers and viewers and listeners, to make sure they understand exactly what happens in these cases.”
