Dr. Carla Fisher joined the CJC faculty this fall as an assistant professor in the Advertising Department. She is also an affiliate member of the UF Health Cancer Center and the STEM Translational Communication Center. Fisher conducts research on the centrality of family communication across the life span. Her focus includes stress and coping behavior, strategic health promotion and risk communication.

“I strive to produce knowledge that can be used to enhance providers’ care and families’ behavior in learning how to adjust to disease and engage in prevention behavior,” Fisher said. “Much of my work has focused on mother-daughter communication and breast cancer risk and coping behavior in which I also focus on families who are considered to be high risk for disease development.”

Fisher was attracted to UF because of the translational interdisciplinary research and the effort to make sure research gets translated to practices to improve the lives of patients and enhance medical care. She was excited to land in the Advertising Department and for the opportunity for collaboration on creating health messages for interventions and social marking campaigns.

“The CJC felt like a great fit to me – the focus on storytelling and narratives in the college is at the core of what I do so I was excited to join such an accomplished group of professionals, researchers, teachers, and students,” Fisher said.

Fisher received her Ph.D. from Penn State University. Honors include the 2016 George Mason University Career Connection Award for making a positive impact on students’ career goals; the 2016 Top Poster Award at the UF Health Cancer Center Research Day; and receiving funding from the Department of Defense as a co-investigator working with the Military Primary Care Research Network.
