Unraveling Virtual Worlds – Eugy Han
Good storytelling immerses the audience in the experience. Eugy Han, an assistant professor in the Media Production, Management and Technology Department, helps our students meet that challenge literally. Although she is new to the CJC family, her work with immersive virtual environments is already helping put UF on the cutting edge of yet another technological field.
“Being in a place (and in Florida more broadly) where people are excited about the same things I am whether that’s immersive technology or creating meaningful stories and experiences is exciting!” said Han.

After spending her formative years growing up in Europe and Latin America, Han came to America to attend college at Brown University, where she earned her B.S in Cognitive Science with honors. She then went to Stanford for graduate school, where she received a Ph.D. in Communication and Media Psychology. While at Stanford, Han was the primary instructor for a course on the metaverse and other virtual worlds. She also served a a teaching assistant for a course on “virtual people,” and one on technology and well-being. She was named both a Stanford Graduate Fellow in Science and Engineering and a Stanford McCoy Ethics Fellow and received a research grant to fund a study on visual conflicts during mediated social interactions. Her work there also earned her some media recognition, with several of her journal articles being featured in outlets like CNN, Stanford News and VentureBeat.
Now an assistant professor at CJC, Han continues to research and teach classes on these emerging technologies. Her course, “Immersive Technology,” introduces students to virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality and demonstrates the psychological and behavioral mechanisms behind how people use and interact within immersive spaces. Her research outside the classroom also focuses on these mechanisms, and she has published two papers recently that explore how these technologies can influence our attachment to places and our memories.
Outside of her academic work, Han hopes to perfect her matcha recipe and writes for fun. “I love writing fiction, and I’ve written several pieces I am proud of, even if most have yet to see the light of day,” she said. “It’s a personal testament to my younger self, who has always wanted to write.”
