January 27, 2026

Angela Bradbery, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Frank Karel Chair in Public Interest Communications, has received a UF Gulf Scholars grant to create a new course, “Addressing Bay Area Challenges with Science and Communications” for the fall 2026 semester. She will co-teach with UF School of Natural Resources and Environment Instructional Assistant Professor Ryan Good.

UF Gulf Scholars, housed at the UF Bob Graham Center for Public Service, prepares students from diverse academic backgrounds with the knowledge, skills and mindset necessary to address the complex and dynamic challenges facing Gulf communities. Through interdisciplinary learning and hands-on experiences, Gulf Scholars will help shape the future of the Gulf region.

The course combines students from both natural science and public interest communications curriculums. They will work with the Tampa Bay Estuary Program to focus on two Gulf-related environmental and sustainability initiatives, the Fort De Soto living shoreline project and the creation of a seven-county coastal master plan to address flooding caused by rising sea levels, storm surge, rainfall and high tides.

Students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the Gulf region and the environmental challenges in the Tampa Bay area, along with the latest scientific research and public engagement activities designed to improve the health of the Bay and Gulf.

According to Bradbery, “The idea is to help natural science students develop public interest communication skills and give public interest communication students an opportunity to delve into policy and work with policymakers and members of the community to translate science into meaningful messages.”
