October 2, 2025

A new academic study has analyzed Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2020 campaign and its use of social media strategies.

The article, “I’m Speaking:’ VP Kamala Harris’ Social Media Campaign in the 2020 Election,” was written by University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism Associate Professor Rachel Grant and Spenser Cheek, M.A.M.C. 2021. It was published Sept. 26, 2025, in Critical Studies in Media Communication.

The study highlights three key approaches used in Harris’ online campaign messaging: presenting a promise of change, addressing concerns of exclusion, and emphasizing collective participation.

Grant and Cheek wrote that Harris’ campaign demonstrates how social media strategies can shape political identity and outreach efforts.
