May 14, 2025

Iman Zawahry, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Media Production, Management, and Technology senior lecturer, is one of four panelists for the Arab Film & Media Institute (AFMI) “Women Leading Change Through Storytelling” session at the 78th Cannes Film Festival American Pavillion in Cannes, France on May 18.

Zawahry is one of the first hijabi American Muslim filmmakers in the nation. Her films have screened at more than 150 venues worldwide. Her debut film, Americanish, has been shown at 50 festivals around the world and has won 25 awards, including Best Director and Best Film. She is an Emmy Award winner, a Princess Grace Award recipient, and a fellow of both the Lincoln Center Artist Academy and the Sundance Momentum Fellowship.

AFMI session panelists will discuss the barriers they have overcome, how they challenged industry norms and how they are opening doors for future generations of storytellers.

The mission of AFMI is to reshape narratives through film to create a more inclusive Arab community and challenge stereotypes globally. The organization honors the contributions of trailblazing women filmmakers who boldly champion global voices through their dynamic work.
