Linjuan Rita Men Comments on How Managers Should Respond to Union Organizing Efforts

Linjuan Rita Men, University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Public Relations professor and director of Internal Communication Research, is quoted in “Workers are Unionizing. How Should Management Respond?” published in Fortune on Jan. 23.

The article focuses on how communication can help either resolve the conflict between management and workers or damage the employee-employer relationship. Experts provide tips on what should be avoided or embraced when crafting a response to employees.

According to Men, “[Employees] have a collective reason for their actions, there must be a root cause for this.” [She recommends] listening and sitting down with them, making them feel that they are heard, their perspectives are acknowledged and respected, and truly standing in the shoes of employees to get to the root of the problem so that you know your next step on what to do to address the issue.”

She adds, “Email, or social media, or other media channels, are not the best way of listening, especially regarding complex, complicated issues.”
