Clay Calvert Comments on Fox News Lawsuit and the First Amendment

Clay Calvert, director of the Marion B. Brechner First Amendment Project at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications, is quoted in “Powerful Cable-TV, Reporter Groups Side with Fox News in Lawsuit” published in the Times of San Diego on May 18.

The article focuses on a lawsuit against Fox News for supposedly violating Washington State’s consumer protection act by providing false coverage of the COVID-19 story.

According to the story, NCTA, the cable industry’s lobbying group, and the Reporters’ Committee for Freedom of the Press wrote the court to combat “the dangerous implications of Plaintiff’s contention that news providers that distribute content over cable systems are somehow excluded from the First Amendment’s purview.”

“The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is probably the nation’s leading media defense nonprofit organization,” said Calvert. “So the fact that they would come to [Fox’s] side of the case is rather significant.”
