Jon A. Roosenraad was a professor emeritus of Journalism and taught at the University of Florida from 1968 up until his death in September, 2023. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, master’s from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. from Florida State University.

Dr. Roosenraad worked at the Lansing State Journal before joining the UFCJC faculty. He served as chair of the Department of Journalism from 1978 to 1994, and was assistant dean for student services from 1994 until 2008. He retired as a full-time faculty member in 2006, but continued teaching as an adjunct instructor until his death. He taught courses in reporting, editing and journalism ethics. He received the UF Outstanding Teacher Award in 1991.

Jon was closely associated with the Independent Florida Alligator at UF, serving on the board of directors from 1976 until 1996. He was chair of the board from 1978 until 1996. Later he was inducted into the Alligator Hall of Fame. He was also honored by the Florida Press Association with the creation of the Jon A. Roosenraad First Amendment Award.

He was an avid runner and walker, huge fan of 1950s rock n roll, and a Gator Booster as he attended a wide range of UF team sporting events. His students were very important to him and he had a significant impact on them as well.

Roosenraad is remembered fondly for his leadership and collegiality. According to Ted Spiker, UFCJC department chair “Jon was amazing at everything—not just for what he did but for how he did it. He was always willing to help and always looked out for students’ best interests. I can’t tell you how many alums have told me their ‘here’s how Rosey helped me’ stories over the years.”
