Jane Bambauer

What are you teaching in fall 2023?

I am teaching Torts to first-year law students (I have a joint appointment with the Levin College of Law.) In the spring, I will teach Media Law.

What is your area of expertise?

Free speech, privacy, AI, social media, and the regulation of new technologies.

What research are you working on?

Right now, I have two works in progress. One analyzes what sort of legal duties of care and accuracy should apply to artificial intelligence companies, particularly when there is a risk that the output of an AI system could cause users to form false beliefs and hurt themselves or others. The other project analyzes how American privacy law can reconcile individual interests in privacy with government transparency, newsgathering and First Amendment law.

Significant other, children, pets?

I have a wonderful, goofball, princess five-year-old daughter named Nadia, and we have a small dog (Fritz) and cat (Marcel) who cuddle and play with each other in complete ignorance that they are supposed to be enemies.

What excites you most about coming to Gainesville?

Great students, beautiful campus, beaches and nature. Also, I feel so fortunate to be able to work with students and faculty in both the law school and the CJC Journalism Department.

What accomplishments, personal or professional, are you most proud of?

I have toured the world in a rock band, SCUBAed in three different oceans, and played violin in Carnegie Hall (in an orchestra, not as a soloist.) My professional accomplishments include publishing an article that helped courts expand free speech protections for information gathering. I have also testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

What three things don’t we know about you?

  1. I can play the saw as an instrument.
  2. I love potted plants.
  3. I am a big snob when it comes to tortillas.
