What are you teaching this semester?

I am teaching a RTV Special Study course called “Immersive Technology (VR, AR, MR)”. This course introduces immersive technologies through an interdisciplinary lens, particularly focusing on the psychological and behavioral mechanisms behind how people use and interact within immersive spaces.

What is your area of expertise?

My expertise lies in immersive technology, particularly virtual and mixed reality (VR, MR). My work focuses on understanding social interactions in immersive virtual environments. More specifically, I investigate how contextual factors — physical, virtual, and social — influence these interactions. I conduct both lab and field studies to examine outcomes such as nonverbal behaviors and psychological processes.

What research are you working on?

I am currently working on several research threads. Here is a peek at some: (1) how technologies such as mixed reality can help us study disruptions to common ground by creating perceptual conflicts for interactants, and (2) how virtual traveling, or the ability to travel to distant and/or impossible places with ease, shapes social and psychological experiences.

Significant other, children, pets?

I have a husband, Nicholas, who’s an engineer in the semiconductor industry. I’m a godmother/aunt to several pets.

What excites you most about coming to Gainesville?

Being in a place (and in Florida more broadly) where people are excited about the same things I am — whether that’s immersive technology or creating meaningful stories and experiences — is exciting!

What accomplishments, personal or professional, are you most proud of?

For personal accomplishments: I love writing fiction, and I’ve written several pieces I am proud of, even if most have yet to see the light of day. It’s a personal testament to my younger self, who has always wanted to write.

In terms of professional accomplishments: I love that I got to (and get to!) work with incredible scholars in my field.

Your hero or biggest inspiration (alive or historical)?

My family – my mother, father, and sister. They’ve paved the road I was able to walk on. My other hero is my husband, who inspires me with his patience, integrity, and brilliance.

What three things don’t we know about you?

  • I am ambidextrous! I do most things with my left hand, but sometimes out of nowhere my right hand takes over.
  • I grew up in 7 countries. I spent most of my childhood in Germany (Freiburg, Berlin) and most of my teenage years in Latin American countries (Venezuela, Uruguay).
  • I love matcha and trying to perfect my matcha recipe.
