UFCJC National Association of Hispanic Journalists student chapter is a finalist for 2026 Student Chapter of the Year award

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) chapter has been named one of three finalists for the 2026 Student Chapter of the Year award.

UFCJC, along with finalists from Northwestern University and University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo, were nominated for their exceptional leadership, commitment to journalistic excellence and unwavering support of NAHJ’s mission to increase Latino representation in newsrooms, classrooms and communities.

The UFCJC chapter experienced a remarkable transformation, growing from a chapter with little activity into a thriving organization with more than 22 members and expanded programming focused on mentorship, career readiness and community engagement. Through professional workshops, networking opportunities and initiatives promoting Latino voices, the chapter created meaningful pathways for student success. Their inaugural Open House Latino Showcase brought together students, faculty, industry professionals and community members to celebrate Hispanic storytelling and showcase student journalism. UFCC Journalism Senior Lecturer Joanna Hernandez is the faculty adviser.

The winning chapter will be announced during the NAHJ Annual National Conference and Expo from July 22–25 in New Orleans.
