WPCF Presents Webinar Series for Aspiring Journalists

Connect with Washington, DC reporters, editors and bureau chiefs through the Washington Press Club Foundation’s spring webinar series. The series will include the following programs, designed for journalism students to gain practical insights into the changing culture and practices of media organizations:

• February 25, 2022    1 pm EST (10 am PST)
  Covering the Midterms – All Hands on Deck
  With national debates about mask mandates and critical race theory impacting local elections the 2022 midterms can be an opportunity to flex your reporting muscles.  Most newsrooms are stretched thin, leaving fewer reporters to cover these smaller events which now are shaping national news. From covering impactful local school board elections to attending events including local congressional candidates, is this your chance to get a scoop on a local story?  Hear from our panel of seasoned journalists on how you can use these opportunities to further your career while still in school.

  The Care and Feeding of Sources
  How do the best journalists go about developing sources?  What are some strategies to get calls returned?  Off the record vs on the record, how do you manage these distinctions and when to use them?  Great sources are key to great stories and getting starting on building your contact list can be daunting. This webinar will feature a panel of three experienced political journalists and two former high profile communications managers to discuss techniques on how to develop and maintain productive relationships with news sources.

  Creative Tactics to Help You Towards Scoring Your Ideal Job
  As the newsroom landscape continues to change, what are the paths that will guide you to your ideal job?  It’s not too early to start planning these strategies.  Are taking on offsite internships or accepting non news positions to get your foot in the door tactics you should consider? Join our panel of experienced journalists and hiring managers as they discuss what they’re looking for in a resumé as well as discover creative ways to be in the right place at the right time when your ideal job becomes available.
