Carbone will receive her Ph.D. in Communication from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the spring and will bring an impressive and interdisciplinary research agenda to the College.

Broadly, her work considers questions surrounding the ways affect and identity influence media selection. Specifically, she is interested in how negativity and identity drive news avoidance. She approaches these questions using novel psychophysiological experiments, as well as surveys and interviews.

Her research looks at non-traditional news sources and the ways these sources reflect and influence people’s politics. She has been published in leading journals such as Journalism Studies, Perspectives on Politics, Communication Theory and Politics and the Life Sciences and has also received several competitive research fellowships and grants.

Carbone has teaching experience in political communication, research methods and media studies.  She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and her master’s in communication from UCLA.
