University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Journalism senior Juan Carlos Chaoui placed third in the 2025-2026 Hearst Journalism Awards Television I Features Competition. The first of two television contests received 109 entries from 66 universities.

Chaoui’s winning entry featured two stories. The first, “A Special Singer” features a developmentally disabled teenager singer who uses her voice to speak the world. The second, “The Rodeo Kid: An Unlikely Teen Roper,” focuses on a teenager who is taking the rodeo circuit by storm after a childhood accident nearly ended his rodeo dreams before they could even begin. He will receive a $1,500 award for third place.

UFCJC is currently tied for third place with Western Kentucky University in the 2025-2026 Intercollegiate Broadcast Competition based on accumulated student points.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 66th year, added broadcast journalism competitions in 1988. In addition to the broadcast competitions, the awards program includes four writing, two photojournalism and four multimedia contests. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends and is open to accredited undergraduate journalism programs from 104 within the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication.
