Celebrating our veterans: Matthew Cretul

November 6, 2025

In 2005, several years before he joined the CJC as an adjunct professor in the Department of Media Production, Management, and Technology, Matthew Cretul enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving on active duty until 2009. During this time, he served as a Psychological Operations Specialist (PSYOP), was both airborne and language qualified, and spent 15 months deployed in Ramadi, Iraq.

While on active duty, he also earned his AA from Santa Fe, and after leaving the military he continued his education at the University of Florida. He graduated with a B.S. in Telecom-News Reporting and completed his MAMC in 2013, also at UF. He worked as an adjunct from 2013-2016 and was accepted into UF’s Ph.D. program in 2016, eventually earning his degree in Mass Communication with a focus in health communications and public health.

“In 2019, I was fortunate to be selected as a Policy Intern through the UF Health Cancer Center & the UF Office of Federal Relations, where I spent time in Washington, DC working in the office of US Congressman Gus Bilirakis,” said Cretul.

Since leaving his internship in 2021, he has continued to work as an adjunct professor for the CJC. He currently teaches “Social Media & Society” and has previously taught courses like “Electronic New Media” and “Sports News Writing.” When he’s not teaching, he also serves as the Legislative Manager for the Marion County Board of County Commissioners.
