Gavin Off to Join UFCJC as a Lecturer in Data Journalism
Gavin Off will join the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications in August 2025 as a data journalism lecturer in the Journalism department.
Off brings more than two decades of experience as a journalist, including 15 years specializing in data reporting. Most recently, he has served as the data reporter for The Charlotte Observer, where his work on government corruption, criminal justice and environmental issues earned national recognition, including four awards for a recent investigative series on North Carolina’s poultry industry.
Off began his career in Florida with The Charlotte Sun and went on to work at newspapers and news services across the country, including Scripps Howard News Service, Tulsa World and The Charlotte Observer. His passion for data journalism was sparked as a graduate student at the University of Missouri, where he worked with the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting.
In recent years, Off has taught data journalism at multiple universities in the Carolinas. He holds a bachelor’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill and a master’s from the University Missouri School of Journalism.
