Safety and Security

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and runs through November bringing the possibility for hurricanes, tropical storms, and other significant weather events to the Gainesville region.  CJC has taken a very proactive approach toward fulfilling our mission of service to community and our students through several hurricane and tropical weather-focused initiatives.

CJC’s public media WUFT, spearheaded and launched a nationally recognized and award-winning public safety initiative called “FPREN” or the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network.  FPREN provides hurricane and other significant weather coverage to every public broadcaster in Florida and South Carolina and has become a national model for keeping the public informed during crisis situations.  You can always get the latest storm-related information through WUFT-FM, WUFT.org and the Florida Storms mobile app, a free download and service of WUFT/FPREN.  It’s always a good idea to have a hurricane kit ready; here’s a great primer on what to include in yours from our partners at the Florida Division of Emergency Management:  www.floridadisaster.org/planprepare/hurricane-supply-checklist/

Finally, a reminder to download the Florida Storms mobile app and to tune into WUFT’s new AI-driven alerting and advisory channel BEACON (Broadcast Emergency Alerts and Communications Operations Network), which broadcasts official government alerts and advisories on two channels in the Gainesville area (WUFQ, 88.5 FM and WUFT, 89.1 HD Channel 4).  This innovative new project was founded at CJC/WUFT and is being developed and deployed statewide in partnership with the Florida Division of Emergency Network.  BEACON is an “always on” alerting channel providing listeners with only the latest official information and has a free download BEACON mobile app available.

Be safe and here’s to a quiet hurricane season!
