First Opportunity

  • Sponsor: Russell Sage Foundation
  • Funding Opportunity Title: Core Research Grants (Core Programs and Special Initiatives)
  • Key words: social science, social, political, economic inequality
  • Link to RFP:  https://www.russellsage.org/how-to-apply/application-deadlines
  • Deadline: Deadline for submitting LOI’s is 07/16/2025. If invited for full proposal submission, deadline is 10/27/25.
  • Funding available: Trustee Grants are generally capped at $200,000, including 15% indirect costs. Presidential Grants are capped at $50,000 (no indirect costs). PIs may request up to $75,000 (no indirect costs) when the proposed research project has special needs for gathering data (e.g.: qualitative research) or gaining access to restricted-use data, or when the proposal budget includes salary support for multiple assistant professor PIs.
  • Period of performance: Budget amounts are over a two-year period.
  • Program Background: RSF encourages methodological variety and inter-disciplinary collaboration, but all LOIs and proposals must have well-developed conceptual frameworks and research designs. Analytical models must be well-specified and research questions and hypotheses (where applicable) must be clearly stated. Grants are available for research assistance, data acquisition, data analysis, and investigator time for conducting research and writing up results. RSF encourages early career scholars who are new to the foundation to apply for Presidential Grants.
  • Program Objective: RSF will accept letters of inquiry (LOIs) under the core programs for Future of Work (FOW) and Social, Political and Economic Inequality (SPEI). The foundation will also accept LOIs under its special initiatives on Promoting Educational Attainment and Economic Mobility among Racially, Ethnically, and Economically Diverse Groups after the 2023 Supreme Court Decision to Ban Race-Conscious Admissions at Colleges and Universities (SCD23).
  • NOTE: LOIs must include specific information about the proposed data and research design. After peer review, about 15% of those who submit an LOI will receive an invitation to submit a proposal. If you are unsure about the foundation’s expectations, we strongly recommend that you review the grant writing guidelines on our website and also view an instructional webinar.
