UFCJC Alumna Receives the Top Honor in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Personality/Profile Competition

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) alumna Lucille Lannigan, B.S. Journalism 2023, received first place in the 2023-24 Hearst Journalism Awards Personality/Profile Competition. There were 127 entries from 68 schools submitted in the fourth writing competition of the academic year.

Her entry, “Moving Forward Through the Rubble” published in UFCJC’s Atrium Magazine, focused on how a young man who has dealt with adversity is now committed to helping the Fort Myers community in the wake of Hurricane Ian.

Lannigan will receive a $3,000 award but because she graduated in 2023, she is not eligible to compete in the 2024 National Championship. She is now working as a Report for America reporter at The Albany Herald in Albany, Georgia.

UFCJC is currently in second place in the Intercollegiate Writing Competition.

The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.
