Alan Halaly, a University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Journalism senior, has received first place in the 2023-2024 Hearst Journalism Awards Explanatory Writing competition for “When the Storm Hits” published on wuft.org.

Halaly is currently the water reporter for the Las Vegas Review Journal. While a student he had internships at the Gainesville Sun and Miami Herald and served as the editor-in-chief for The Independent Florida Alligator.

The Journalism Awards Program, now in its 64th year, also includes two photojournalism, one audio, two television, and four multimedia competitions. The program offers up to $700,000 in scholarships, matching grants and stipends. 105 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs are eligible to participate in the Hearst competitions.

The second writing competition of the academic year included 123 entries from 74 schools. Due to a conflict, he will not be available to compete in the National Championships.
