UFCJC Student Journalists Honored in State and National Contests for Atrium Magazine Work

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications student journalists have been honored by the 2023 Florida Magazine Association (FMA) Charlie Awards and the 2023 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) Magazine Media Division’s Student Magazine Contest for work published in Atrium, the first narrative nonfiction magazine published by UF students.

The FMA Charlie and Silver Award winners include:

  • Student Excellence in Best Multimedia Content: “For the Love of Dog” by Master’s student Mindy Nissenberg, photos by Anderson Bobo, M.A.M.C. 2023, and video by Ryan Haley, B.S. Journalism 2023
  • Student Excellence in Best Photography: “Happy Thorsday” by Lauren Witte, B.S. Journalism 2022
  • Student Excellence in Best Content: “A Changing Tide” by Avery Lotz, B.S. Journalism 2023, photos by Mariel Wilery, B.S. Telecommunication 2022
  • Silver Award: Student In-Depth Feature: “Gainesville’s Local Legend(z)” by Ryan Haley, B.S. Journalism 2023

The AEJMC Student Magazine Contest Winners include:

  • Best Profile: “Healing Waters” by Madison Chestang, B.S. Journalism 2022
  • Runner-up for Best Profile: “A Mess of Happiness” by A.J. Bafer, B.S. Journalism 2023
  • Best DEI: “A Changing Tide” by Avery Lotz, S. Journalism 2023
  • Best Essay:  “The Twin Thing” by Marlena Carrillo, B.S. Journalism 2022, illustration by Journalism senior Bryce Brown

FMA’s annual Charlie Awards competition honors publishers, writers, editors, artists, photographers, printers, marketers and others as the best among their peers. Entries vie for first, second and third place awards—Charlie, Silver and Bronze.

The AEJMC Student Magazine Contest recognizes magazine entries that are sponsored or advised by journalism programs and written, edited, designed and produced by students.
