Diane McFarlin Quoted in NYT Opinion Piece on Community Journalism

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications (UFCJC) Dean Diane McFarlin was quoted today in a New York Times‘ opinion blog post “Celebrating Local Journalism“.

The blog post, written by New York Times columnist David Leonhardt, discusses the value of local journalism and shares a list of great local stories submitted by Twitter followers and deans of several college journalism programs.

McFarlin is quoted in the story’s lede: “Community journalism is the lifeblood of democracy and very much at risk these days.”

The College, earlier this year, entered into a partnership with the News Integrity Initiative to examine what research from multiple academic disciplines tells us about community engagement and trust in news. The project will also develop experimental curriculum and training for local newsrooms to help implement best practices from that research into news coverage tactics.

UFCJC in October announced it has been granted $1.25 million from the University of Florida to launch the Consortium on Trust in Media and Technology, an initiative that will address declining trust driven, in part, by the manipulation of powerful new technology and social networks.
