Get to know the right people – and try to be at the right place at the right time.

That’s the advice ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, TEL 2000, recently gave students when she visited the UF College of Journalism and Communications. (Watch the Webcast of her talk.)

UF named her one of its 2007 Outstanding Young Alumni.

She highlighted the perks and drawbacks of the business, saying that while attending major sports events like the Final Four can be exciting, missing holidays, weddings and living out of a suitcase make the job difficult.

“It’s a huge sacrifice,” she said. “You have to really want it.”

Andrews began her career in 2000 as a freelance reporter for Fox Sports Florida South. She also served as a Tampa Bay Lightning reporter for the Sunshine Network and as a reporter for Turner Sports before joining ESPN in 2004.

“We didn’t ask her to do this,” Dean John Wright said. “She volunteered to come and spend her time today talking to students.”
