Fond Memory: Making the Switch

By Lauren Irizarry

I was one of those annoying students who loved Reporting. Coming from a small town where there was no student newspaper, it was exhilarating. In fact, I loved it so much I petitioned to switch from Public Relations to Journalism — apparently the switch often happened the other way.

I will never forget walking into Professor Bill McKeen’s office (former Department of Journalism chair) to ask for his signature and, ultimately, blessing. “Who do you have for lab?” he asked, without looking up from his computer. “How are your grades?” “Why do you want to switch?” After our unceremonious exchange, I left with his signature and a slightly tepid blessing. And I am continually grateful for both.
