I didn’t really understand what journalism was when I attended UF’s Summer Journalism Institute in 2013. All I knew was that I liked writing and a couple of my friends were going, so I thought it would be a fun time. And it was a fun time indeed — probably one of my favorite weeks from my high school years — where I learned journalism basics that helped me excel once I got to UF. Plus, for one of the first times in my life, I felt free — free to walk around campus during the day with friends, to prank my roommates and to live on my own, if only for a week. The Summer Institute really simulates college life and college journalism in a way that left me feeling both excited and ambitious.

Ethan Bauer attended the 2013 Summer Media Institute. He graduated from the University of Florida in May 2018.
