Elfi Schlegel is one of the most distinguished figures in collegiate gymnastics and sports broadcasting, celebrated for her elite athletic achievements, extensive commentary career, and enduring impact on the sport.
Born on May 17, 1964, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Swiss immigrant parents, Schlegel began gymnastics at the age of seven and quickly emerged as a national standout. Early in her career, she captured international attention by winning gold medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and multiple medals at the 1979 Pan American Games, helping elevate Canadian women’s gymnastics on the world stage. Schlegel was named to the Canadian national team and selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics; however, she did not compete due to Canada’s participation in the Olympic boycott.
Schlegel continued her athletic journey at the University of Florida, where she competed for the Florida Gators women’s gymnastics team from 1982 to 1986. During her collegiate career, she was a six-time All-American and a four-time Southeastern Conference champion — excelling in the all-around, balance beam, and vault — helping the Gators to consistent NCAA national championship appearances. In 1986, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in telecommunication production from UF.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions to Gator athletics, Schlegel was inducted into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame as a “Gator Great” in 1997, affirming her legacy within the Gator family.
Following her competitive career, Schlegel became a prominent sports commentator, bringing technical insight and charismatic delivery to gymnastics coverage. She served as an analyst for major networks including CTV, CBC, and notably NBC, where she covered gymnastics at multiple Olympic Games from 1992 through 2012 — becoming one of the most recognizable voices in Olympic sports broadcasting.
Across her multifaceted career, Elfi Schlegel remains a trailblazer — blending athletic excellence with media expertise and inspiring generations of athletes and fans alike.
