CJC Undergraduate Student Petitions
Undergraduate students may appeal certain UF/CJC regulations to a CJC petition committee. Please understand that the university is a complex system with many layers of governance, so your issue may best be addressed by someone other than the CJC petitions committee. We understand that you cannot know all of those layers of administration. To best help you, we require initial information to determine whether your issue is petitionable or better handled in another department. Please fill out the form below. You will receive an email about your next steps within approximately 72 hours (business days).
If you are instructed to submit a CJC petition, you will be sent the form and materials. Be thorough and thoughtful. Use proper grammar and sentence structure. Explain why your situation is unique and deserves special treatment. Include as much documentation as possible.
It is important to note that just because an issue is petitionable, that does not mean it will be approved. But your advisor will assist you on next steps and course of action to help meet your goals, even if it is not your preferred decision.
College Petition Review Dates
The CJC Petitions Committee will review properly submitted petitions on the Thursdays as noted below. Be sure to submit your petition by 12 noon on the Monday before the scheduled meeting . If your petition is submitted after the deadline, we cannot guarantee that it will be reviewed by the committee that week. If your petition is not formatted properly as outlined in the instructions, it will be recycled back to you and will likely delay the review by the committee.

Note that the following requests would NOT go through the CJC Petitions Committee. See your advisor for help navigating these requests:
- Additional drops for medical reasons
- Course substitutions within the major
- Prereq waivers within the major
- Innovation Academy requests for in-person course enrollment
Common Types of Petitions
PETITION TO DROP A COURSE: A petition to drop a course is necessary only if 1) you are past the drop/add deadline, but the semester has not ended yet, or 2) you need an additional drop because you have already used your allotted drops. If you are within the deadline and have available drops, a petition is not necessary.
If reasons 1) or 2) apply to you, follow these instructions: 1) Meet with your professor to discuss possible options BEFORE beginning the petition process. 2) Fill out the pre-petition form. If you are directed to submit a petition, you will be sent the petition form to fill out.
You will need documentation to show extenuating circumstances.
Please note that approval to drop course(s) does not waive your fee liability. To petition a refund of fees, you must complete a University Petition. Refer to the forms on the Registrar’s website. The following conditions are NOT VALID reasons for additional drops/drop past the deadline:
- Failing a course
- Need to “protect” your GPA
- Registered for too many hours
- Busy with extracurricular activities
- Professor suggested dropping
PETITION FOR COURSE SUBSTITUTION: Course substitution for a college degree requirement (outside concentration, quantitative option, English elective): Students are required to submit a syllabus from the institution where they completed the course as well as supporting documentation from the department/professor that teaches the course at UF. Course substitution for university degree requirement (GE-N): students are required to submit a syllabus and supporting documentation (information to document course meets learning objectives).
GRADUATION EXTENSION: Our college expects you to graduate in a timely fashion. For first-year students, this means you need to finish in 4 years. Transfer students will be allowed up to three years to complete their degree (including summers). You will be required to submit a letter of support from a faculty or chair for this petition.
CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT REQUEST: This petition is to take a class elsewhere in fall or spring while enrolled in UF courses, or to take more than one course elsewhere in summer while enrolled in UF courses. (IA students can petition to take classes in spring or summer while enrolled in UF courses, or to take more than one course in the fall while enrolled in UF courses.) You will need documentation to show extenuating circumstances.
BREAK RESIDENCY: This petition is to take a class elsewhere when you are within their last 30 credits required for the degree. From the catalog: “Students are required to complete the last 25% of the credits needed to satisfy the requirements of their major by taking UF courses.” You will need documentation to show extenuating circumstances.
OTHER REQUESTS: If you do not see your reason for petitioning on this form, meet with an advisor to discuss your situation. The advisor will help determine if using this process is appropriate or make other recommendations. If the advisor agrees that this is the correct process, then you should complete the petition as advised.
